The Council of the City of Portsmouth (1945)
The following is transcribed from the Council Year Book (1945-1946) with some additional information from "The Records of the Corporation" compiled by G.E. Barnett. For the first time in the history of the Borough or City Council the automatic re-election of retiring Aldermen was challenged by Councillor Norman Harrison who proposed 6 senior Councillors for the Aldermanic elections. Councillors Lacey and Griffiths were elected at the expense of Aldermen Dashwood and Ellis-Jones. This being the first election for Councillors since before the war, several of the wards were required to elect 2 or 3 Councillors to replace retiring members.
