Those named below formed the first Council under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. 42 Councillors were elected on 26th December 1835 and of these 13 were elected to the Aldermanic bench on 1st January 1836 (plus James Paul who was elected directly). On January 9th 1836 13 more Councillors were elected to replace those chosen as Aldermen.
