The Council of the Borough of Portsmouth (1856)


There were 2 bye-elections in 1856. On November 1st one third (14) of the Councillors retired and submitted themselves for re-election. 6 Councillors lost their seats. On the 10th of November, 6 Aldermen(*) retired and all were re-elected. In addition one new Alderman was elected at the "Tri-ennial Election". There was an election for Mayor.
