The Council of the Borough of Portsmouth (1853)
There were 5 bye-elections during 1853. On November 1st 1853 one third (14) of the Councillors retired and submitted themselves for re-election. 10 Councillors lost their seats. 4 Alderman(*) retired on November 9th and all were re-elected. Three other Aldermen were elected at "the Tri-ennial Election". There was an election for Mayor.
