January 3rd 1949 - At the Coliseum, Cinderella, and at the Theatre Royal singer Anne Shelton, and at the Kings Theatre, Mother Goose. Dancing to Billy Norman and his Hawaiian Orchestra at the Embassy Ballroom, for one night only.
 
January 4th 1949 - Cyril Rice and his Accordion Band play at the Landport Liberal Club in Lake Road.
 
January 5th 1949 - The Hampshire Old Time Orchestra join Jan Ralfini and his Orchestra at the South Parade Pier to play for the Ex-Service associations Old Time Ball. The Portsmouth 'New Hot Club' for jazz meets to hear jazz records.
 
January 8th 1949 - Saturday, At the Odeon Ballroom Cosham, dancing to Eddie Gilliford's Novelty Quartet.
 
January 10th 1949 - Johnny Lyne and his Music play at the Embassy Ballroom.
 
January 12th 1949 - Dancing to Geraldo and his Ballroom Orchestra plus Jan Ralfini and his 18 piece Orchestra at the South Parade Pier for the National Union of Retail Confectioners Annual Ball. Manager at the Pier, Mr D Evans.
 
January 13th 1949 - Manager at the Theatre Royal, Mr C H Paice.
 
January 14th 1949 - Oscar Rabin and his Band at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
January 15th 1949 - Eddie Gilliford's Novelty Quartet play at the Odeon Ballroom Cosham.
 
January 17th 1949 - Billy Cotton and his Band appear at the Theatre Royal all week. Colin Courtney and Sylvia Bennett of Madame Courtney's School of Accordion Playing of 94 Somers Road, are in Puss in Boots on the Isle of Wight.
 
January 19th 1949 - Leonard Leslie's Orchestra join Jan Ralfinis Orchestra at the South Parade Pier for the Portsmouth British Railways Social Committee's Annual Dance.
 
January 21st 1949 - At the South Parade pier, The Four Aces appear. At the Savoy Ballroom, Cyril Stapleton and his Music, featuring Pearl Carr, Dick James and the Staplejacks, play for dancing. At the Odeon Ballroom Cosham, Dancing to Eddie Gilliford's Novelty Quartet.
 
January 22nd 1949 - The De Reske Orchestra play at the Oddfellows Hall.
 
January 26th 1949 - Norma Picard, formerly with Harry Roy, sings with Benny Freedman's Band at the Embassy Ballroom. 150 pensioners are entertained by the Salvation Army Accordion Band at the Southsea Citadel.
 
January 28th 1949 - Teddy Foster and his Orchestra at the South Parade Pier.
 
February 1st 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom dancing nightly to the new resident band Dennis Hale and his 14 Piece Orchestra.
 
February 2nd 1949 - Saxophonist Cyril Brown join the Tommy Joyce Band at the Empress.
 
February 4th 1949 - Harry Gold and his Pieces of eight, with Betty Taylor and Geoff Love, play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
February 5th 1949 - The Music Club meet at the Central Public Library for their 7th anniversary meeting.
 
February 7th 1949 - Jessie Mathews and Patricia Burke appear in 'Sweethearts and Wives' at the Kings Theatre. At the Theatre Royal, Peter Brough and Archie Andrews plus the Western Brothers. Jimmy Harris becomes Musical Director at Kimbells Osborne Road and his Dance Orchestra will play at evening functions. His trio with Jimmy Harris at the piano will play for morning coffees and afternoon teas.
 
February 11th 1949 - The Squadronaires Dance Orchestra appear at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
February 18th 1949 - Geraldo and his Full Broadcasting Orchestra play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
February 21st 1949 - Vera Lynn appears at the Theatre Royal.
 
February 23rd 1949 - Felix Mendelsshon and his Hawaiian Serenaders play for dancing on South Parade Pier, together with Jan Ralfini and his Orchestra and Len Ashdown and his Music. At Kimbells Osborne Road, the Portsdown Archery Club have Jimmy Harris and his Orchestra to play for dancing.
 
February 24th 1949 - The Portsmouth Music Club give a recital at St Phillips Church Cosham, singers were, Joy Lineham, Frank Morley and Thomas Smooker(violin).
 
February 25th 1949 - At St Saviours Hall Stamshaw, the Teddy Hanks Four Dance Band play for dancing for the Portsmouth British Legion Northern Branch.
 
February 26th 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom for two nights, Vic Lewis and his Full Broadcasting Orchestra. Billy Bennett's Band play at the Temple Youth Club in Victoria Road South, Portsmouth.
 
February 28th 1949 - At the Oddfellows, 'Jive Nite' with Fred Lansdale's Hit Band of the Season.
 
March 4th 1949 - Billy Bennett's band play for the Portsmouth West Conservatives at their hall in Fratton Road. At the Savoy Ballroom for two nights, Nat Gonella and his Collegians with Herlen Mack play for dancing.
 
March 5th 1949 - Jan Ralfini's farewell night on South Parade Pier.
 
March 7th 1949 - At the Theatre Royal, star of 'Hi gang' Vic Oliver.
 
March 9th 1949 - Jive dancing contest on South Parade Pier. The New Collegians conducted by Wally Fry are at the South Parade Pier. BBC Workers Playtime is recorded in a Builder's hut in Paulsgrove for future broadcast, and starred Beryl Reid.
 
March 11th 1949 - Ted Heath and his Music with Paul Carpenter appear at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
March 12th 1949 - Mick Mitchell and his Band return to the Savoy ballroom with guests Jack Simpson and his All British Tunes. Jimmy Harris and his Band play at Kimbells Osborne Road. The De Reske Orchestra play at the Oddfellows Hall.
 
March 17th 1949 - Portsmouth's own juvenile star Bobby Collins, direct from an Irish tour, appears at the Savoy Ballroom and judges a crooning contest. The Teddy Hanks Dance Band play at the Oddfellows on St Patrick's day.
 
March 18th1949 - Cyril Stapleton and his Orchestra play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
March 19th 1949 - At the Central Hall Fratton Road, the Portsmouth Choral and Orchestral Society perform Beethoven's 5th Symphony. The St Cecelia Singers and Reg Wassell give a recital entitled 'Shakespear and the song' to the Portsmouth Music club.
 
March 21st 1949 - The Black and White Concert Party who have given over 300 shows to local hospitals and institutions, have decided to disband.
 
March 23rd 1949 - All this week at the Savoy Ballroom, local discovery vocalist Lyn Phillips.
 
March 25th 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom, the Ray Ellington Quartet play for two nights.
 
April 1st 1949 - Ronnie Munroe and his Dance Orchestra at the Savoy Ballroom supported by the Freddy Syer 'Bebop' Group. Alf Hallman and his Orchestra join Wally Fry and his Collegians at the South Parade Pier.
 
April 5th 1949 - Dancing to Terry Nash and his Commanders at the Transport Club Stubbington Avenue.
 
April 6th 1949 - Harry Parry and his Sextet play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
April 8th 1949 - Johnny Lyne and his Music join Wally Fry at South Parade Pier for two nights.
 
April 10th 1949 - The Squadronaires play at the South Parade Pier.
 
April 11th 1949 - Big Bill Campbell and his Rocky Mountain Rhythm appear at the Theatre Royal. The Portsmouth Guitar Club starts meetings at the Air Balloon in Commercial Road. Operetta 'The Lilac Domino' at the Kings Theatre.
 
April 13th 1949 - Kimbells Clifton Rooms are closed for 10 weeks but there will be dancing in the restaurant to Jimmy Harris and his Orchestra. At the Oddfellows Hall, the De Reske Orchestra play for dancing.
 
April 14th 1949 - At the Oddfellows Hall, the Teddy Hanks Four play for dancing.
 
April 15th 1949 - Good Friday At the South Parade Pier, The George Mitchell Choir and Jan Ralfini and his 18 piece Orchestra with Kenneth Stroud at the Hammond Organ appear.
 
April 17th 1949 - The Squadronaires play at the South Parade Pier.
 
April 18th 1949 - It's Chico Marx, the famous Hollywood piano playing comedian, in person, at the Theatre Royal. The Portsmouth Players perform Jerome Kern's 'Sunny' in the South Parade Pier Theatre.
 
April 20th 1949 - Ronnie Hancox and his band appear at the Embassy Ballroom.
 
April 22nd 1949 - Tito Burns and his Music with Terry Devon, play at the Savoy ballroom.
 
April 23rd 1949 - Johnny Lyne and his Music play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
April 24th 1949 - Paul Fenoulhet and his Orchestra, with vocalist Dick James, play at the South Parade Pier.
 
April 25th 1949 - At the Theatre Royal, Hollywood's famous singing star Allan Jones appears. The first anniversary of the 'Hot' Club was celebrated when Mr. P Warner gave a recital on records of New Orleans music. The was also a 'History of Jazz' illustrated by F Hurlock cornet, P Collins clarinet, M Warner & D Barker trombones, E Piggott guitar, J Inglish bass, J Thomas & C Hansell drums.
 
April 27th 1949 - Vosper's apprentices Grand Spring Dance at Hilsea Lido with the Rhythm Comets playing for dancing.
 
April 29th 1949 - Ace trumpeter Freddie Randall and his Band play at the Savoy Ballroom. Ad in the Evening News;- Portsmouth newest six piece Roy Styles and his Band, available for engagements, 28 Manor Road, Kingston.
 
May 2nd 1949 - At St Michael Church Hall Paulsgrove, dancing to Teddy Hanks Four with 'electric guitar'.
 
May 4th 1949 - Bill Cole and his Clubmen, winners of the Southern Britain dance band Championship 1948/49, play at the Empress Ballroom along with Tommy Joyce and his Orchestra. The Portsmouth Bach Society present the Orchestra of the Royal marines at the Central Hall, Fratton Road. Conducted by Mj. F Vivian Dunn they performed works by Beethoven, Bach, Elgar and Schubert.
 
May 6th 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom, Nat Temple and his full Broadcasting Band play for dancing.
 
May 7th 1949 - Johnny Lyne and his Music join Mick Mitchell at the Savoy Ballroom. The De Reske Orchestra play at the Oddfellows Hall. The Royal Marine Dance Band play at St Mary's Institute for the St Wilfred's Boys Club Cowplain Grand Dance.

May 20th 1949 - Tommy Sampson and his New Radio Orchestra with Terry Walsh, Pete Titterson and the 'Sampsons' and the Danny Moss 'Bop Group', play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
May 21st 1949 - Isobel Ballie sings with full chorus and orchestra, a program of Handel and Purcell, for the Portsmouth Choral Union at the Portsmouth Northern Grammar School.
 
May 22nd 1949 - The Squadronaires play at the South Parade Pier.
 
May 23rd 1949 - The Teddy Hanks Four play at St Michael's Church Hall Paulsgrove. Benny Freedman and his Orchestra play the final week at the Embassy Ballroom.
 
May 25th 1949 - The Portsmouth Choral and Orchestral Society perform Bach's Mass in B minor at the Portsmouth Cathedral.
 
May 27th 1949 - The Jack Simpson Sextet play at the Savoy Ballroom. Billy Bennett's Band play at the Drill Hall, Hampshire Terrace for the Territorial Army dance.
 
May 29th 1949 - Vic Lewis and his Orchestra play at the South Parade Pier.
 
May 30th 1949 - The Portsmouth Schools Music Festival begins. Ronnie Hancox and his Orchestra return for the summer season to the Embassy Ballroom.
 
June 1st 1949 - Portsmouth's own 13 year old Bobby Collins will be on stage at the South Pier Blackpool for 13 weeks this summer season.
 
June 3rd 1949 - Robin Richmond and his Organ Grinders Swing play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
June 4th 1949 - Mick Mitchells Orchestra at the Savoy Ballroom is supported by Dick Wichello and his Music.
 
June 5th 1949 - Primo Scala and his Accordion band play at the South Parade Pier.
 
June 6th 1949 - Larry Adler and his harmonica plays at the Theatre Royal, Max Wall and Bill Waddington also appear. Derek Roy hosts the summer show on the South Parade Pier. Jaques Vallez and his 'Savoyards' Orchestra playing on the Pier deck. Teddy Hanks Band play at St Michael's Church Hall, Paulsgrove. The De Reske Orchestra play at the Oddfellows hall.
 
June 8th 1949 - The Modernaires Dance band support Mick Mitchell at the Savoy ballroom.
 
June 10th 1949 - Eric Winstone and his Princess Hotel Orchestra with Leslie Howard and Julie Dawn, play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
June 13th 1949 - Rob Wilton appears at the Theatre Royal.
 
June 15th 1949 - The De Reske Orchestra play at the Oddfellows hall.

July 16th 1949 - The new "Rhythm Incorporated Jazz Club" at The Conservative Hall in Fratton Road advertise for new members. Residents groups are Bill Cole and his Clubmen and the Norman Bryant Quartet.
 
July 18th 1949 - Issy Bonn and Sam Costa appear in "The Melody lingers on" at the Kings Theatre.
 
July 19th 1949 - The Portsmouth New 'Hot' Jazz Club has a lecture about the Louis Armstrong Hot Five.
 
July 22nd 1949 - Humphrey Lyttleton and his Band play for dancing at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
July 24th 1949 - The George Mitchell Choir plus The Jerry Allen Trio play on South Parade Pier.
 
July 25th 1949 - Sam Costa appears at the Theatre Royal.
 
July 27th 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom, appearance of The Parade Orchestra, the only Continental Orchestra in the country.
 
July 29th 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom, El Marios and his All Ladies Rumba Band.
 
July 30th 1949 - Reg Bannistra and his Music play at the Court Royal Hotel Southampton.
 
July 31st 1949 - Paul Fenoulhet and his Orchestra play at South Parade Pier.
 
August 1st 1949 - Billy Ternent and his BBC Orchestra play at the Savoy Ballroom all week. At the Theatre Royal, Borrah Minevitch and his Harmonica Rascals entertain.
 
August 6th 1949 - Portsmouth's first ever Brass band Festival is held on the Castle Field at Southsea. Bill Cole and his Clubmen win the 1949 Melody Maker South Coast Dance Band Championships at the Rex Ballroom Bognor, and will go on to compete against winners from other regions later in the year. The Kimbells Clifton Rooms are now re-opened for functions. Eleven bands enter the Southsea Brass band contest.
 
August 10th 1949 - The Mirthquakes Concert Party, consisting of Winifred Delaney, Evelyn Bradley, Ivy Roach, also R Goodyear, H Stares, L Ivemy, F Cressdee and H Moreton, perfom at the Ebeneza Hall, Twyford Avenue in aid of the 7th Portsmouth BP Scout Group.
 
August 12th 1949 - At the Savoy Ballroom, Freddie Randall and his Band with Maxine Russell, play for dancing.
 
August 15th 1949 - Tommy Sampson and his Orchestra play on South Parade pier.
 
August 19th and 20th 1949 - Ted Heath and his Band with Jack Parnell, Dickie Valentine and Jakie Armstrong, appear at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
August 20th 1949 - At the Cosham Civic Center, music from Pervin's Popular Players Band.
 
August 21st 1949 - Leslie Douglas and his Orchestra appear at the South Parade Pier.
 
August 22nd 1949 - America's Deep River Boys, plus Anona Winn appear at the Theatre Royal. Brass Bands and songsters from various Salvation Army districts assembled on the Castle Field for a day long performance to aid the Portsmouth band funds.
 
August 24th 1949 - The Modernaires play at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
August 26th 1949 - Harry Parry and his Sextet featuring Dinah Kaye appear at the Savoy Ballroom.
 
August 28th 1949 - Nat Gonella and his Georgians play on South Parade Pier.
 
August 29th 1949 - Benny Freedman and his Band, including Joe 'Tiny' Nicholls, return to the Embassy Ballroom. Nat 'Rubberneck' Jackley appears at The Theatre Royal. "Rhythm Incorporated Jazz Club" present Johnny Lyne's Swing Group at the Conservative Hall, Fratton Road.

October 16th 1949 - Municipal concert begin again at the Kings Theatre with a visit of violinist Campoli.
 
October 17th 1949 - Electric violinist Alan Mack, from the Ralph Sharron Bop Quintet and Charles berry, late of Teddy Foster, play at the Rhythm Incorporated Jazz Club at the Conservative Club Fratton Road.
 
October 18th 1949 - Teddy Hanks and his Five Piece Band play at the All Saints Hall, Commercial Road.

December 10th 1949 - The Portsmouth Glee Club present Handel's 'Messiah'. The Royal Marine Orchestra play at the Odeon Ballroom Cosham for the Royal Navy Athletics Club. Teddy Hanks Band play at All Saints Church Hall for the Portsmouth North British Legion.
 
December 11th 1949 - Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, from the Vienna Sate Opera performs at the Kings Theatre.
